Hills Department Store Top 40 Pops and 10 Best Selling LP's for Jan. 12, 1972

A list for those of you who remember when we were young and not so innocent...

ON THIS DATE:

GENESIS is live at the Philharmonic Hall, New York, NY, during their Foxtrot Tour.
You can see it on Youtube here!

That's all I could find music-wise for this date in history (I'm going for the exact date here).

SO LET'S JUST SKIP TO THIS EDITION OF THE HILLS DEPARTMENT STORE TOP SELLING RECORDS LIST THAT IS DATED JANUARY 12, 1972.

Okay, for the top selling singles
(I'm writing this before I even look at it so I'll be as surprised as you are)
(Okay, I'm looking now...)
(Okay, I'm not surprised because it is close to the top selling singles from the last list I put up which was only a weeks ago.)

BUT ANYHOW

Back on January 12, 1972, DON McLEAN had the #1 single with "American Pie".
(Did he ever do anything after that?)

THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY has 3 of the Top 10 Selling Albums.
(Bless their hearts. It beats that Rap Crap you hear today.)

ALSO

THE GRASS ROOTS are trying to figure out how to divide

CARLY SIMON is still waiting on that catsup (ketchup) bottle

THE WHO recognize eye color

THE CARPENTERS are inflicting pain

AND THEN THERE'S THESE GUYS

Hills Department Store Top 40 Pops and 10 Best Selling LP's for Jan. 3, 1971

For those of you whose prime partying days were the Sixties and Seventies!

ON THIS DATE:

YES is at the Greyhound, Croyden England during their "YES ALBUM" tour

That's the only concert I could find that was going on on that particular day.
I do have these tid-bits though:

THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS are on The Barbara McNair Show (some guy named "Doctor Magaic" was on there too).

It's Nationall High Five Day in the U.S.A.

THERE MAY BE A MISTAKE ON THE LIST THIS GO ROUND -

The fact of the matter is I think there's a misprint at the top of the original list that is pictured here.
It says Jan. 3, 1971 but the TOP SELLING RECORDS are pretty close to the list from December 13, 1971 and the one coming next (Jan. 1972)

This has to be from 1972.

I know "American Pie" and "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" were popular - but for a year?
(In other words those are two of the top four selling singles this go round.)

On a lighter note, "ALL IN THE FAMILY" by the original cast has the #3 selling album!

ALSO

MICHAEL JACKSON doesn't want to miss an appointment

DAVID CASSIDY strikes out on his own and does THE ASSOCIATION

THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY is having one of those nights like we've all had (Maybe because Mr. Cassidy took off...)

LED ZEPPELIN sings about a non-white canine

And now a slight pause while I get away from the capital letters for a moment.

End of pause.

GROUPS WHO WISH THEY WERE MORE REMEMBERED

Think, Betty Wright, Leonard Family

For John Lennon On His Birthday

It's John Lennon's birthday today.
Due to the significance of this day in Rock and Roll history the usual Hills Top 40 Pops list will not be seen. It will be back the next post.

I really don't know where to begin on this one.

I grew up with The Beatles.
Was only seven years old when they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Saw that and they have been my favorite group to this day.

I still remember Christmas 1965.
One of the presents I opened was the Beatle's latest album "Help".
Have no recollection of any of the other presnts Santa brought me that day -  that was one of those great moments I never forgot. (still have that LP.)

I loved all the Beatles but John was my favorite.

You knew he was the leader. His wit was sharp as a razor. He was cool.

Read his book "In His Own Write and A Spaniard In the Works". Totally Hilarious. Still have the book.

This was not just a great song writer with one of the greatest voices in rock and roll hiistory.

JOHN LENNON WAS AN ORIGINAL

He told us all that ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE.

He wanted us all to GIVE PEACE A CHANCE.

He wanted everyone to have a HAPPY CHRISTMAS.

He did do some off-the-wall things (Yoko, the Bed-In, protesting, etc.) but that was okay.
It was just John being John.

He "retired" for a couple years to be a "house-husband" and a daddy to son Sean.

It seemed like ages until...
he finally started recording again.

With the release of "Double Fantasy" John was back!

And we couldn't be happier.

Today, on October 9, he would have turned 74.

IMAGINE what could have been.

I miss him.

John Lennon-  Imagine
